Schmayberry JUMPS into the … well, 1900s
We’re getting a restaurant! An actual eatery. Right here in town.
I get asked a lot why I list my twitter location as “Schmayberry” and aside from some anonymity, for the simplest explanation, we’re a lot like Andy Griffith’s Mayberry, only not as nice. Or metropolitan. We are definitely old skewl small town NC. Mayberry was based on towns like mine. In fact, Andy grew up and still lives not 30 miles from here.
I laugh when I hear others talk of being from a small town. Then they’ll say they have a population of like, 10,000. Schmayberry had a population of 256 at the last census in 2009. I think it’s gone up to 304 since then. If you look at the population of the zip code as whole, it climbs to 2800. What I’m trying to say is…it’s SMALL!!!
We have no police department.
We have no gas stations.
We have no stores aside from a thrift shop.
We have NO STREETLIGHTS! Not a one. Not even a blinker.
We do have a 2 truck volunteer fire department made up of some farmers, a student, and the water guy.
We have a post office, which will probably be closed if the USPS has their way.
Oh and we have a funeral parlor.
But come Wednesday, we will have a restaurant !!!
And I pray the coffee will be good.
